Rainwater Harvesting

With climate change now a reality rather than a speculated possibility, the demand on water resources has gone up, whilst the amount of water available for supply has gone down. Forth coming regulatory changes will mean that over 90% of UK homes will have their water usage metered, making consumers more and more aware of how expensive the commodity of “common or garden” water has become.

From a simple, above ground water butt to below ground storage tanks and comprehensive, automatic recycling systems, WPL’s range of rainwater harvesting products provide versatile, economic and ecological solutions and give consumers the ability to freely collect water and use it with out feeling guilty; on their plants and lawns, for washing their cars, in their washing machines and in their toilets.

WPL’s Carat range is fully compliant with European regulations and is simple to handle, install, use and maintain, making it ideal for DIY and selfbuild and appropriate for specification by professionals in the construction industry.

Schools & Educational Buildings

The Department for Children, Schools and Families estimates that UK schools spend around £70 million a year on water and wastewater services. Investing in water management systems, such as rainwater harvesting, can reduce this figure significantly, benefiting the school’s budget and environmental performance.

Over 50% of water consumed in schools does not need to be of drinkable quality.
Harvested rainwater from the roofs can be used for several applications including:
Toilet Flushing
Washing Machines
Cleaning
Plant Watering
Vehicle Washing

In addition to helping schools make dramatic savings in mains water consumption, WPL’s RainBrain rainwater harvesting solution for the education sector also provides an opportunity for pupils to develop their understanding of sustainability within the school curriculum.

RainBrain – The Rainwater Harvesting Package for schools
WPL provides a full design and advisory service to ensure each RainBrain rainwater harvesting solution meets a school’s individual needs in terms of storage capacity.  The fully automatic system offers a choice of underground or aboveground, impact resistant tanks for applications ranging from 13,000 litres to 200,000 litres and the latest in low noise self-priming pumps and controls from WPL’s Commercial Eco Range.  In addition, a floating suction pump inlet with a filter suspended beneath the surface ensures the water taken is at the optimum level of cleanliness.  All systems come with direct feed, duty assist and duty standby pumps where required.

Rainwater is collected from roofs, filtered and stored in a tank, then pumped into the school for various non-drinking or non-bathing purposes.  As a further health and safety precaution for schools, the system can be supplied with an optional UV filter for additional sterilisation.

The RainBrain digital display unit is linked directly to the system which can be installed inside the school so pupils are able to monitor the amount of water harvested and used on a graphical display panel.

The digital display panel includes:

Digital Depth Indicator – displays the depth of the water stored in the tank
Rotameter – visual indicator of flow and quality
Digital Use indicator – indicates the amount of water harvested and used
Digital Presentation – brief slide show and graphic presentation describing the rainwater harvesting process
